The Ford F3 truck was the first generation of the hugely succesful F series which is still in production today with over 33 million units sold to date.
The first F series trucks rolled off the production line in 1948, there have now been 13 generations of this venerable US workhorse. The predecessors to the F series were all based on car chassis, the F series was the first Ford truck with a purpose built chassis.
The first generation F series was made in 8 different variations from 1948 - 52.
The F3 version was the heavy duty ¾ ton truck and remained in production until 1952 when the second generation arrived. The truck could be purchased with either a flat head 6 or V8 petrol engines both with a manual gearbox. It was also possible to specify a four wheel drive system.
The truck was lovingly restored over a period of 4 years in Colorado Springs, Colorado. The restorer wanted to build a "subtle hot rod" that could be driven to and from shows and for weekend trips. This was a complete frame off restoration.
Modern engine, brakes, exhaust, power steering and transmission were added to the frame and original 1950s body and cab.
The engine is a 1991 Ford 302 V8 roller motor (300 bhp estimated) which has been converted from fuel injection using a Holley 4 barrel Carb and electronic ignition. This is mated to a Ford AOD 4 speed automatic transmission which in turns sends the power to a Ford 9" rear end.
Power steering and power disc brakes have been added to improve driveability from the original 50s design. The suspension has been dropped to enhance handling and to provide that subtle hot rod stance. The wheels and tires have been sized to match the characteristics of the new power train.
This interior of the F3 has a nice balance of new and old.
The bench seat has beeen newly upholstered in a contrasting black with red panels which incorporate a nice horizontal ribbing. This is complimented by black carpets and a nicely finished black lining applied to the rear of the cab and roof. Modern seat belts have been installed to improve safety.
The new steering column is nicely finished in chrome with an on the tree gear selector and indicator. The chrome and black steering wheel feels nice to the touch and is perfectly sized when combined with the new power steering.
The beautiful white on black original instrument panel, radio, storage and glovebox offset the new with a blast of nostalgia to make sure you don't forget this trucks 1950s heritage.
The Ford Racing Mustang Red paintwork is not for the shy and retiring but none the less seems to suit this truck down to the ground.
The paintwork is nicely done, however there are some imperfections. The same applies for certain parts of the bodywork, the restorer made a conscious decision to leave some of the minor bumps and bruises to reflect the working heritage of this heavy duty F3 truck.
The chromework is either new or in very good condition, the emphasis is on a subtle upgrade to the look rather than being in your face. Slightly les subtle, although nicely done, are the chrome tipped side exiting exhausts which poke out from under the running boards on either side.
The bed of the truck is beautifully finished in Wormy Maple with chrome strips.
In keeping with the over all theme the wheels have been tastefully finished in painted grey with chrome and red striped vanity rings.
